Young member of DPL Chess Club places first in tournament

Phillippe Laroche, a local fifth grade student, finished “1st Unrated” in the K-5 Primary Reserve Section in the 51st NYS Scholastic Chess Championship recently held in Saratoga Springs on March 10 – 11, 2018 with scores of 3W, 2L and 1D in the six round tournament. The New York State Chess Championship is one of the United States Chess Federation’s longest running scholastic chess tournaments with over 1200 students competing annually. The K-5 Primary Reserve section alone had 168 participants.

Chess has much to offer elementary level students as evidenced by the National Association of Secondary School Principals including the National Scholastic K-12 Grade Chess Championships on its “National Advisory List of Contests and Activities”. Numerous studies have recognized the educational value that comes from Chess.

Phillippe is an active member of the Dunham Public Library Chess Club, the only organized Chess activity in the Mohawk Valley. The Dunham Public Library Chess Club congratulates Laroche on his scholastic tournament success.
