Our library is the ♥ of the Whitesboro community and the surrounding area. Recently we received a letter from a library patron which says it all. The patron writes: I was disabled with severe back problems and told I would never work again. I had to wear a back brace and suffered much pain. The library was a life saver as I was an avid reader. Through physical therapy I was able to strengthen my back enough to go to Utica School of Commerce and re-educate myself. As you can imagine, the library helped me every week with my studies. Without it I might not have made it through the courses at the school. I read everything I could and especially mysteries. They kept my mind off my problems from time to time.
There were many trials raising four boys and both my parents were in ill health. With the help of God and the library I made it through. I was able to work eleven years longer than a doctor predicted and supported my family until they were all grown and graduated from high school. This is one of the reasons the libraries are so important to the public. More and more single parents are out there in need of education so they will be able to raise their families without the help of welfare. Also in today's depressed economy many need to re-educate themselves in order to find work at all. Are they able to buy expensive books, computers, printers, etc.? Many are not. Without libraries they would not be able to obtain new goals and new jobs. Some would not be able to e-mail resumes out so they could seek new employment. This letter says it all. All of our staff at Dunham Public Library welcome you to explore our virtual location via our new website and we hope that you will also visit us on Main Street in historic Whitesboro, New York. We wish to thank the Friends of Dunham Public Library for funding the development of this new website. |
